Specialized Intraocular Lenses for Cataract Surgery
At Eye Physicians & Surgeons our doctors provide the latest surgical skill and techniques in cataract surgery. The facilities we operate at employ excellent anesthesiology providers, nurses, and surgical staff, with top of the line instrumentation. We routinely perform “no needle, no stitch” surgery to remove a cataract. The outpatient procedure is short and painless with improved vision as soon as one day, and full vision recovery usually within one week.
Eye Physicians & Surgeons offers the latest technology in new intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can be used during cataract surgery. Astigmatism or Toric IOLs are available for mild, moderate, and severe amounts of ocular astigmatism. Studies have shown that with a Toric IOL implant over 90% of eyes achieve 20/40 or better distance vision without glasses. Our own data with the Toric IOL showed an average of reducing patient’s astigmatism by over 75%! Despite the fantastic distance vision outcomes this IOL provides, over-the-counter reading glasses are typically required.
Another new generation intraocular lens that offers reading and distance vision is now available. This IOL functions somewhat like a normal bifocal that people would have in their glasses. Through new optical design, this IOL will focus both distance and reading light rays. These IOL’s work best in people who have low levels of astigmatism, and need both of their cataracts out within a short period of time, usually weeks or months. Studies show approximately 75% of the patients that receive these implants do not ever wear glasses, with another percentage of patients only wearing glasses on a part time basis.
These specialized or premium IOL’s are not entirely covered by patient’s health insurance, and results in an out of pocket expense. In general these lenses are an option for approximately 10-15% of the patients that are considering cataract surgery, since many patients do not fit the criteria as described above. At Eye Physicians and Surgeons, we are happy to discuss this latest technology intraocular lens with our patients to see if this would be a benefit to them.
